When Lance started to experience pain in his left leg, his mom, Carol, chalked it up to growing pains. When Lance's leg began to swell and he developed a limp, Carol took him to the doctor. An X-ray revealed a mass in Lance's leg, which was identified as osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer.

Lance's dad, Joe, was stationed with the National Guard in Afghanistan. Carol contacted him immediately. While Joe made arrangements to return stateside, Carol researched options for Lance's treatment and care. Everyone she spoke with agreed: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital was the best place for Lance. His doctor agreed and referred him immediately.

At St. Jude, Lance's treatment protocol called for 36 weeks of chemotherapy. In December 2008, he underwent a limb-salvaging surgery, where the diseased portion of the affected bone was replaced with a prosthesis. Lance received physical therapy three times a week to help build strength and mobility in his leg.

Lance has finished treatment and returned home.
